Renewable energy expert says the current focus on renewable energy is skewed towards electricity generation and not on actual energy output.

Professor Richard Heinberg, from the Post Carbon Institute in California, said electricity was only 20 per cent of global energy requirements.

The other 80 per cent is used directly in many industrial processes, which he says needs technological breakthroughs to replace the massive global infrastructure that supports them.

Singleton Solar Farm leading the way

THE Singleton Solar Farm is pioneering a new business model that could encourage large scale renewable projects in the Hunter Valley and Australia.

XYZ Solar, owners of the solar farm, will provide 12 per cent to the University of Technology Sydney’s Chau Chak Wing Building’s annual electricity consumption, indirectly, for the next two years.

About half of the 407kW solar farm’s energy credits will be attributed to the University in what is called a Virtual Net Metering (VPN) arrangement.
